Museum acquistion policy

One of a museum’s primary functions, which is directly linked to the reason for its existence and determines its ability to perform its other institutional functions, is the acquisition of items of interest. These items are organised into museum collections that authentically document the life of society, the environment in which they develop, and the level of social, economic, cultural, artistic and scientific development. As such, museum collections are a part of national cultural heritage. Acquisition is thus the deliberate, systematic, continuous process of acquiring items of cultural value for long-term preservation, specialist processing and scientific research, and the use of the information, evidential, scientific, historical, cultural and artistic value of such items in presentational and educational activities.

Since the mid-1970s, the Museum of Coins and Medals in Kremnica has been developing its profile as a specialised numismatic museum. The majority of the museum’s collection is thus made up of numismatic items documenting the development and history of various means of payment in the historical territory of Slovakia from the earliest uses of items from nature to the latest euro coins and bank notes, alongside the equally rich history of medal making in Slovakia. Another significant and integral part of the museum collection consists of collection items documenting the history, present and significance of the town of Kremnica (construction, architecture, administration, crafts, art and culture, social life, etc.), the history of its famous mining and metallurgy industries and naturally, the unique activity of the Kremnica Mint, which has operated without interruption for nearly 700 years.
